Archive for the ‘Beer in the news’ Category

One year ago today we published our first live post where TDY Tim walks us through brewing his cherry stout. Since Tim’s article we’ve been through 126 posts, hundreds of beers and countless good times. We may sometimes disagree about beer, but we all agree that we’ve most definitely enjoyed the last year creating and growing TDY. The blog has allowed us to meet so many great Pittsburgher’s who share an appreciation for quality beer and help make this blog possible. Our sincerest thanks for reading.

Cheers,

Jake, Tim and Mark

The widget was a major innovation for nitrogen-poured beer lovers.  I specifically remember when Guinness Draught first appeared.  What is this thing in the bottom of the can?  The widget is essentially a small plastic device meant to hold additional nitrogen gas and mix it in with the beer when poured.   (For those that care : the solubility of Nitrogen in beer is much lower than CO2)

During my daily perusings of everything beer related, I came across this nice little article describing new research to create foam in non-carbonated beers.  Researchers  from the University of Limerick have found that pouring the stout over filter paper in the lab caused bubbles to form on the fibres.  If the addition of a small amount of paper can create as many bubbles as the widget, the price might actually come down.  (Whether you and I will see that savings is another matter.)

The article also gives a nice description of carbonation, bubble formation, and just exactly what those widgets are supposed to do.  Just in case you ever wondered!  It reminds Jake and I of all those days we spent in chemical engineering labs.

This cool video/live streaming feed was sent to us by our friends at Cork and Kegs.  From what we gathered this is a cool start up tech company that makes things.  “They got a ton of really cool videos that nerdy engineers like ourselves would enjoy”, Craig.  So tonight they are doing a live episode on making beer and coffee.  Below are the details and link.  Let us know what you think.

When: TONIGHT, Wed May 11 at 9PM et………yeah sorry technical difficulties, but it is still up

Where: http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/05/make-live-episode-08-brewing-beer-coffee-preview-video.html

Who: Make

In exchange for shooting up this link Cork and Kegs promised us to let the Steelers beat the Browns one of the 2 games / would buy us a round next time we are together. … but NOT a round of $21 dollar Macallan scotch.  What they don’t know is that the Steelers are good for 2 wins and we will get the $21 Macallan.

The May 5-8th is a weekend of awesome if you live in Pittsburgh and enjoy quality drinking. There’s the Pittsburgh Wine Festival, The Brewers Ball and the East End Pedal Pale Ale Keg Ride. Just one problem: All three of us will be in Chicago celebrating TDY Tim’s recent engagement. Here’s where you come in.

We’d love to have you help us cover these events while we’re away. We know you’ll be at these events. You know you’ll be at these events. Why not take some pictures, a few mental notes and write us a post? If you’re here, you know we’re a laid back bunch. So just have some fun and take an hour after the event share your thoughts.

How will we thank you? Good question. We have two tickets to the phenomenal Hunters Gatherers show at Bricolage that can be yours. Because we only have two tickets and potentially three different posts and writers, we’ll also extend our thanks via a few beers at your favorite establishment. If you have something else in mind, let us know and we’ll do our best.

Email us at TheDrunkYinzer@gmail.com and let us know a bit about you and what you’d like to cover.

Thanks!

It’s game seven day. I can’t focus on anything for more than ten seconds without having visions of dragging Ryan Malone through the Ft. Pitt Tunnels behind some obnoxiously decorated black and gold yinzer truck. Instead of writing each of these beer-related stories into a post, I’ve splattered them here for your hump day enjoyment.

For a visual list of what we’ve been drinking lately, check out our Twitpics.

Let’s go Pens.

Cool video on how New Belgium uses process control technology to be “green.”  As an engineer and beer lover, I found this very interesting.  It was also impressive that a brewery has better process control equipment than some other industries.  Even if you aren’t into the nerdy tech stuff check the video out.  It’s a great story on how a brewery understands its role in the environment and how it uses cutting edge technology to accomplish its sustainability goals.  New Belgium treats their wastewater, co-generates energy from methane gas, controls their brewing process and integrates with their HMI (Human Machine Interface).

To learn more about New Belgium’s sustainability efforts, check out the well put together summary on their site.

Contrary to popular belief TDY does read.  Here are some random thoughts from newspaper clippings that were sent to me from my grandparents and parents.  Is it weird that they are all mostly alcohol related?

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Bob Batz Jr. Someone will be calling it ‘Obamabeer’

  • This one has been around for some time now, it was printed 2/17.  The article does a nice job building hype for the Victory Headwaters, Great Lakes Doppelrock and Penn’s Kaiser Pils.  I haven’t seen the Great Lakes around town yet, have you?  Then the article brings up the Obama Super Bowl party beer.  Every time I hear about his party I get upset.  For the last time Yuengling doesn’t represent Pittsburgh.  I would have been happier if they drank Iron City.  Anyways the White House Honey Ale gets more press.  I really wonder what it would take to get a bottle…Rumor has it that President Obama is entering the Trash XXI Home Brew Contest.  Lastly the Hell with the Lid off is advertised.  How was that?  We were unable to attend and never really heard anything about it.

The Dominion Post by Lindsey Fleming Celebrate St. Pat’s with a homemade brew

  • They even brew in Morgantown.  Not sure if you can find this one online, but we read it so you don’t have to.  The article does a nice job of outlining the popularity that craft beer and homebrewing have gained over the past decade or so.  Morgantown’s homebrew club, MASH, gets a nice mention.  The main characters, Bryce and Prof Nix, are interviewed on their home brew adventures.  Great high level article and would definitely interest the non-homebrewer to give it a try.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Bob Batz Jr. From ‘nanos’ big breweries grow

  • Here is the second offering from the Post-Gazette and Bob Batz Jr.  I enjoy reading Bob’s articles, he usually has interesting content that is presented in a ‘want to read more’ manner.  This is a great write up on the local nano scene, specificlly focusing on Beaver Brewing Company, Milkman Brewing, Hop Yard Brewing and the awesomely unique beers they brew.    Nano’s have been a nationally growing trend.  There is no barrel production definition for what a nano brewery is.  The goal of most nanos is to test the waters and bridge the gap from homebrewing to microbrewing or brew pub.  There are a lot of passionate homebrewers in the region and nanos are popping up right in our back yards.  Keep your eyes open for events with each of the above local nanos.  Keep checking their websites, I know we will.  I don’t know about you, but that article has me really excited.  I’m heading out today to look for brewing space and equipment…I’m serious.
  • Beaver Brewing Company is having an event on April 19th at OTB Cafe.  They will be releasing their brews and the brewer(s) will be present.  They are also opening the brewery up on April 2nd.  More info on their website.

This raises so many questions:

Will it work with a pint glass?
Can we drink the beer faster that it fills up?
Can we just spray the beer in the air and drink it like a water fountain?
What event is this taken from?
Why didn’t anyone buy this for us for Christmas?

Check out the poster of that video, BottomsUpBeer, for more.

Vintage Schlitz Beer Advertising

Imagine you’re relaxing after a long day, lounging on the couch and just about to read the latest issue of Drunk Yinzer Digest. You start flipping past pages and pages of extremely engaging beer reviews, home brewing tips and sexy yinzers when suddenly you see an ad with a ketchup packet stuck to it. Upon further examination, you realize that the ad isn’t promoting Heinz, but instead it’s from a brewery offering free packet-sized beer samples. Not ideal conditions to deliver beer, but free beer nonetheless.

Of course, this could never happen in America. But our Russian friends aren’t as litigious. Kozel, a Czech lager, attached one sample packet each of their light and dark beers in the latest Russian issue of Maxim. Makes us almost wish we’d lost the Cold War.
